Meet the ShenNong Beekeepers

OUR BEEKEEPERS ARE THE BACKBONE OF OUR SHOP, AND WE OWE EVERYTHING WE DO TO THEIR HARD WORK (ALONGSIDE THEIR BEES), CREATING THE MOST NATURAL, DELICIOUS RAW HONEYS WE CAN FIND.

We visit all our beekeepers regularly to see their processes, meet the bees, and hear about the current conditions.

All the beekeepers we work with keep their hives in fairly remote, high altitude areas, with Xiao responsible for areas up to 1,000 meters above sea level, Tang for areas up to 1,500 meters, and Huang for areas up to 2,000 meters. Stay away from industrial farming and use respectful beekeeping methods. They avoid practices used by industrial beekeepers. Just as importantly, they have abandoned the practice of taking all the honey and replacing it with sugar. When they harvest honey from the hive, they always leave enough for the bees to consume during the lighter months of the year. This means they produce far less than some of the larger industrial producers. We believe this is vital to producing the purest, highest quality, most flavorful raw honey, while treating the bees and the environment with the utmost care and respect.

Xiao is a 4th generation beekeeper, continuing a long tradition of natural beekeeping. He now works closely with his son and son-in-law to carry the business into the future. He is our first and longest-running beekeeper to produce certified organic raw honeys. His beehives are located in and around the cliffs of the shennongjia mountain range at about 2,000 meters above sea level.

Tang is a very meticulous beekeeper, keeping a close eye on the quality and purity of his raw honey. He has won many awards from the International Taste and Quality Institute over the years for the excellent flavours of his various products. The main source of pollen for his honey is wildflowers such as highland Schisandra, Poria cocos and Codonopsis pilosula, etc. Tang and his hives are located at 1500 meters above sea level in the shennongjia mountain range.

Huang's hives are located near 1000 meters above sea level in the shennongjia mountain range, which is very wild and sparsely populated. The forests and bushes stretch for miles and are ideal for wild herbs such as Dendrobium, Polygonum multiflorum, Eucommia ulmoides and others. These trees and plants produce a delicious honey with a variety of "flavors" and only about 1,000 bottles are produced annually. There is also no pesticide or industrial pollution, and Huang is a dedicated beekeeper who follows organic principles and often sleeps in the forest near the bees during the honey production season.
